Live by the Word

“It is written, man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." Matthew 4:4

Let’s Look Closer

Jesus here repeats a beautiful truth which was first written in the Old Testament (Deuteronomy 8:1-20). This chapter summarizes the experience of the Jewish nation, from the time they left Egypt to their arrival in the promised land, forty years later. It highlights Gods' care for Israel. It boldly tells us that when they got hungry, God fed them with manna. He protected their clothing and didn’t even allow their feet to swell during the long journey. (vs 3,4).

But then the warning is clearly stated to those weary but ecstatic Hebrews. Beware… least when thou hast eaten and art full and hast build goodly houses, and dwelt therein and when thy herds and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied , and all that thou hast is multiplied… then they heart be lifted up… and thou say in thine heart, my power and they might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth.” Simply stated, when things are going good we tend to take credit and forget about God.

While it seems like a strange warning it is one that is crucial in determining a persons happiness. God knows that as humans we tend to forget about God and take credit for the blessings He gave us. Further He knows that if we take credit for His work, we are heading down a destructive road.

For example, when experience the blessing of health or get well after being sick we are tempted to take credit and say things like:
“I have strong genes”
“My diet was/is good”
“I took the right medication”
“I drank the right juice”
“I believed the right thing”
“I took the right tea”
and on and on it goes with, I and My.
Yet, this Scripture reminds us that God is responsible for all that is good. How often do we seek to promote ourselves, to gain and live for food and clothing, when it is God who sustains and prospers us with much more than just food and clothing.

Apply It

This scripture tells us that the time we spend in the Word of God is even more important than our daily food. Even more amazing is that God feeds us His Word AND provides for our physical needs just like took care of the children of Israel! Do you want an adventure that will feed your soul and give eternal life? Then feed your mind every day by reading and applying the truths learned from the Bible, the Word of God. Our ideas and plans lead to disappointment, but Gods' Word gives life.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, You have shown me in your Bible that life is more than just meeting my physical needs for food and clothing. I thank you for those things, as you know I have need of them. But I thank you also for meeting my hearts' need for love, acceptance and fulfillment through your Word. I pray that you will help me to be a student of your Words so that I will remember that it is You who gives life and You who is responsible for all that is good in my life. Amen
